We represent clients at every administrative level, in a varied mix of state, federal and foreign judicial forums, and in an extremely wide range of disputes with taxing authorities. We draw on our depth of experience to tailor each representation to meet our client’s objectives. We regularly represent clients through the audit process, Appeals procedures, before the Appeals Division of the IRS, the Board of Equalization (BOE) as well as U.S. Tax Court.
- State and local taxation:
As the capital of California, the 5th largest economy in the world, the Sacramento region is the ideal location for our state and local tax practice because it allows us to connect with the state’s taxing agencies and provides the unique opportunity to practice before these agencies on a daily basis. Against the backdrop of an increasingly interconnected world, tax agencies often scramble to the same dollar. We regularly assist clients throughout the U.S. to minimize their California tax liabilities, which may include property, state income, as well as sales and use tax
- Multi-jurisdiction tax/California nonresident tax practice
We often render advice to foreign nationals, U.S. and foreign businesses about the ongoing personal and operational issues facing businesses and individuals regarding California tax nexus, operations and assets in multiple jurisdictions. Today, the world is smaller than ever and the global business and investment community must consider the tax business and regulatory framework of multiple states or countries. We guide clients through the competing considerations between different states or countries of legal residency, and the different advantages of acquiring or establishing a business in one or more locales.
- FTB/IRS tax liens:
We can assist you in addressing and resolving state tax liens, including those imposed by the Franchise Tax Board (FTB) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). These liens attach to all real property owned by the taxpayer. Our attorneys have convinced these agencies to withdraw or release tax liens for many clients. If you hire us early enough, we can often prevent the state from filing a lien in the first place.
- Offer in compromise:
The IRS often makes offers in compromise with taxpayers to resolve the taxpayer’s liability. We have extensive knowledge of the compromise process; we can help you through it. Frequently, we help our clients settle their tax debts for far less than they owe. Our attorneys have negotiated with the IRS many times, helping our clients arrive at favorable compromises.
- Tax levies:
The IRS can use a tax levy to seize a taxpayer’s assets in substitute of tax payments. The agency can attach a levy to any property you have, including your real estate properties, bank accounts and cars. You should contact us as soon as possible so we can work to proactively prevent the IRS from attaching a tax levy to your property. If it already has, we may still have a way to work with them to have it released.
- Innocent spouse relief:
If you divorced your spouse but have found yourself on the hook for taxes from your joint return, you should seek our help. We will sit down with you in this stressful time to determine whether you are eligible for innocent spouse relief measures. If so, we will do everything in our power to put them in effect so you do not have to pay taxes for which you are not responsible.
These are just a few of the concerns we help our clients with every day. One of our most appealing benefits is the proactive stance we take. By working with you today, we can help you avoid more serious tax troubles in the future.
